This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated health and safety officer to join the Health & Safety team who provide competent health and safety support to managers and staff across all Council departments, schools and partner organisations.
This role reports to the Senior H&S officer
About the role
The role involves the provision of health and safety advice and support to managers and staff within HCC, schools and partner organisations. So, a broad and secure knowledge of H&S legislation and practice is key, with the ability to build good relationships at all levels of the organisation.
Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills are essential.

Key tasks being:
- Monitoring adherence to health and safety legislation and HCC policy and procedures via our audit and inspection programme. Ensuring effective monitoring and data recording.
- Assisting in the development and delivery of health and safety training and supporting our Health and Safety Co-ordinators across the organisation.
- Contributing to the Council's Health and Safety guidance ensuring this is regularly reviewed and updated.
- Monitoring accident and incident reports and statistics identifying trends and assisting with investigations / debriefs as required.
About you
Essential:
- You will have a NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health or equivalent as a minimum.
- The ability to understand complicated and detailed legislation, rules and procedures and interpret them to clients effectively and clearly.
- Good attention to detail -ability to provide accurate advice both verbally and in written reports.
- Good organisational skills - able to prioritise your workload effectively.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build good relationships.
- Good ICT skills proficient in use of MS Teams, Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook.
- You will be required to travel to sites across Hertfordshire thus applicants must have access to a vehicle and driving licence that is valid in the UK.
- Local Government experience successfully providing health and safety advice and support to a range of clients.
- Good public speaking skills
- Qualified to NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health or equivalent. With a commitment to continuing professional development e.g., through membership of IOSH or similar.
