Your new role
The Transport Planning Team is looking to recruit a Principal Transport Planner to deliver our residents' parking programme and support other transport projects such as our car club and mobility hubs. As a Principal Transport Planner, you will be responsible for the provision of expert advice on strategic transport issues, particularly those regarding parking provision. This role has a focus on the development of transport strategy, including delivery of our Portsmouth Transport Strategy and Parking Strategy. As well as developing emerging transport policy and strategy, your work will help to shape a number of high-profile pieces of work. You will engage and consult with councillors, external stakeholders and residents on transport planning issues addressing varied and complex issues.
What you'll need to succeed
You will have a relevant degree level education OR demonstrable equivalent professional experience. Membership of a professional body is desirable but not essential. You will be able to communicate messages (which may be complicated or sensitive) clearly, concisely and at a level appropriate to the audience, who may not be specialists in transport planning.
You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to represent the service with direction at highly challenging internal/ external meetings, with integrity and confidence. You will be able to put forward persuasive and compelling arguments. You will also have excellent writing skills including the ability to write clear, basic and appropriate information for reports, articles and briefing papers including technical and Cabinet reports where necessary.
You will have the ability to work independently and proactively, with the experience of working in a politically sensitive or with potentially controversial issues. You will also advance the provision of shared transport modes within the city through the development of effective working relationships with operators, other local authorities and key stakeholders.
