This is a unique opportunity for a creative experienced social worker to make a real difference in the lives of children who have lived experience of either their own or parental substance and alcohol use.
We are looking for a children’s social worker with a minimum of 2 years’ experience to be based at Burleigh Court with colleagues in Barnsley Recovery Steps, our partner agency working with young people and adults who want to address their substance use.
Barnsley Recovery Steps is an all-age service that offer a range of free, confidential and non-judgemental support for individuals and their families whose lives are affected by alcohol and other drugs. Their vision is to break down the barriers that stop people getting the support they need to live a life they value. They have experienced and professional teams who will work with individuals to manage, reduce or stop, depending on their personal goals.
This role has been created to form part of an integrated multi-disciplinary team to further develop our cohesion and partnership working to support young people with co-occurring needs including substance use and mental health and their parents/carers. This team includes Barnsley Recovery Steps recovery navigators, counsellors and counselling psychologist, SWYT mental health nurses and practitioners for children and adults and an Adult Social Care social worker.
The post holder will be managed by the Team Manager, Children & Young Peoples Team 2, and will be based at Burleigh Court. Your responsibilities will include:
• Offering consultation, support, advice and guidance to colleagues in Recovery Steps in relation to child impact, safeguarding children and taking action where necessary to ensure that children are safeguarded
• Undertaking direct work with young people who want to address their substance and alcohol use
• Undertaking direct work with parents and carers who use substances and alcohol, supporting them to develop their understanding of the impact of substance use and strategies around safety planning and minimising risk to children.
• Contribute to plans and intervention for children open to children’s social care related to their own substance and also parental substance/alcohol use
· Collaborating with young people, family, carers and professionals to achieve best outcomes for children and young people and drive plans to robustly address physical, identity, emotional, and educational needs.
Children and their families are at the centre of all that we do, and our practice is underpinned by a strength based and relational model. This means supporting our social workers to develop relationships and to really know and understand children; to; apply evidence-based interventions and meaningful direct work to make timely decisions and plans for children that will achieve positive and sustainable outcomes for their future.
