The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Waste Minimisation Officer to join our Recycling and Waste Team for a one year period. The team are responsible for delivering a leading, open, fair and green service to the residents of North Somerset.

We are currently preparing for the introduction of a new recycling and waste service seeking to minimise waste, increase recycling and tackle the climate emergency. This role has a direct impact on North Somerset residents as well as helping the council achieve the objectives of our ten-year waste strategy.

In this role, you will be delivering recycling and waste advice and support to residents. You will be required to carry out a range of technical and advisory activities working within existing procedures and routines with limited supervision. You will require a thorough knowledge and understanding of the work processes to support the team, work unsupervised much of the time and resolve technical and process problems and queries, with readily available advice from managers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Working as part of a team to increase recycling participation
• Engaging and supporting residents to reduce their waste
• Undertaking inspections, monitoring and enforcement
• Being able to work on own initiative and be able to plan day-to-day work load.
• Providing general support to the Recycling & Waste Team as required.

Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.

This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closing in 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.

This role is fixed term for 1 year from the start date.

Work Style

However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

This role falls into the category of Flexible Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:

• 2-3 days in the office
• Works both from home and the office, depending on the task at hand.
• Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.

About You

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about recycling and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

• GSCEs in Maths & English
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to present evidence clearly and confidently
• Full driving licence
• Demonstrate initiative and ability to work unsupervised, recognising professional boundaries and to seek advice when appropriate.

Desirable Criteria:

• Previous experience with recycling and waste minimisation
• Environmental or behavioural change qualification
