Barnsley Council is an award-winning council in South Yorkshire, serving around 227,000 people.
We’re a bold, ambitious council and believe in the possibilities of Barnsley, to look to the future with excitement and optimism. Our borough is a place that fosters and grows ambition, enabling everyone to be the best they can be.
Barnsley 2030 is our shared ambition, and it guides everything we do. It’s co-produced with our communities, businesses, and organisations.

In 2023 we made history by becoming the first council to win the two most prestigious awards in local government within the same year. The MJ Awards’
‘Local Authority of the Year’ followed our triumph at the Local Government Chronicle Awards where we were crowned ‘Council of the Year’.
Your role in our journey
An exciting opportunity within Barnsley Council to improve your employability after graduation with a year in industry in Barnsley MBC’s Human Resources & Organisation Development Service. This programme, also known as a sandwich year, allows you the student to incorporate a work placement into your degree and gain valuable work experience. We will also benefit from someone who can bring fresh and innovative insight into our projects, working with various members of our HR team to help grow your knowledge, skills and experience.
What you’ll need
To join us, you’ll be undertaking a related degree with a knowledge of human resources tools and techniques. You’ll assist with the development and delivery of key projects within the Human Resources & Organisational Development service area by supporting with research and developing policies, procedures and initiatives across the Council. Crucially, you must be an excellent communicator and understand the importance of partnership working.
A lot to look forward to
Here at Barnsley, we live and work by four important values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service, and taking pride in what we do. As part of our team, you can be sure we’ll do all we can to support you in being truly excellent. We prioritise learning and will enable you to achieve your potential. So, we’ve created a development process that lets you grow in the way that suits you - whether that’s training to be a leader or learning flexibly online.
That’s one of the reasons why you’ll find your placement year here inspiring and rewarding.
