The Opportunity

Salary: Soulbury EIP 4-6 £44,545 to £47,170 per annum, pro rata for part time

Contract Type: Fixed Term/Secondment until 31 December 2025

Working Pattern: 37 hours per week, full time. Part time hours are also available.

Location: Bridge House, Worthing, and County Hall North, Horsham

We are seeking a qualified Teacher to join West Sussex County Council (WSCC) as an Advisory Teacher, based within our Autism and Social Communication Team (ASCT).

You will be able to use your skills and knowledge to professionally lead inclusive practice, and focus on schools to improve pupil progress and access to learning.

The Autism and Social Communication Team (ASCT) is part of our Specialist Teaching Service (SATS), sitting within our Education and Skills Directorate, supporting the delivery of inclusion in schools for children and young people.

The Inclusion Strategy focuses on providing support and challenge to all school leaders with a significant emphasis on ensuring appropriately inclusive practice in our schools.

About the Role

The ASCT provides advice and support to schools for individual pupils with autism, social and communication needs to enable schools to provide best inclusive practice for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The team also provides a variety of training to schools (e.g., Understanding and Supporting Autism, Practical Classroom Strategies, Comic Strip Conversations and Developing Self-Regulation etc) The team also provides courses for parents (e.g., Earlybird+ and ASCSURE.)

As an Advisory Teacher for ASCT you will specialise and focus on Social Communication Difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Conditions. You will use your inclusive practice and teaching skills to improve pupil progress and access to learning.

You will act as an ambassador to enhance the quality of inclusive teaching and learning, leading on developing and supporting the continuous improvement of settings and pupil progress.

This role will involve building trusting relationships whilst working closely with colleagues and partners across educational settings and within our Specialist Teaching Service, such as leaders, managers, governors, parents, and practitioners.

We are looking for someone who has a knowledge and understanding of autism with a passion for inclusive practice in all areas of work. You will be able to challenge existing practices and identify innovative solutions.
