Job Description

IT’S OFFICIAL. WE ARE GOOD.

Ofsted has rated our Children’s Services as GOOD overall, with Leadership being rated as OUTSTANDING. Read Ofsted’s published report in full here.

Management was described as being ambitious and effective in delivering care and protection for children. Ofsted noted that we have created an environment where good social work can flourish, with manageable caseloads and a strong Social Work Academy. Ofsted also commended our Practice Model; Newham Circles of Support.

Ofsted described Newham as having an improved CPD offer and a positive culture of learning and development; our expanded QA service, team of Practice Development Social Workers and our Clinical Team serve as an excellent support network for practitioners. Our flexible approach to working has continued post pandemic, and Newham offers genuine remote working to social workers. Most practitioners work from home entirely outside of a weekly anchor day, which most find a refreshing opportunity to check in with management and colleagues face to face.

We will continue to strive for the best for our children their families as we continue on the path to making Newham a centre of excellence for children’s social care.

ABOUT THE JOB

Newham’s Divert Service consists of two teams, STAY and TEN2. Both teams may take on cases but also work on a co-allocation basis alongside colleagues in the wider service and external organisations, so partnership working is an everyday occurrence and a key aspect of a Team Manager’s work is managing, allocating, and monitoring this workload. As the leader of the team, Team Managers deliver intensive, restorative supervision to colleagues, focusing on improving outcomes for young people and families who find themselves on the ‘Edge of Care’, where there is an emerging risk of exploitation, where there is risk of extra-familial harm, and where there is a plan for reunification. Our Team Managers are looking to lead positive change and enable families to remain together.

Team Managers play a vital role in supporting our Newham Together vision by ensuring that our social workers feel supported and that high quality systemic practice is delivered to children and families. Team Managers are expected to show strong but compassionate leadership and create a secure team environment of open discussion/challenge whilst allowing restorative work to flourish.

Reporting to the Service Manager, depending which part of the service a TM leads in, they could be line managing Social Workers, Family Coaches, Family Group Conference Coordinators and Senior Social Workers – as well as specialist positions such as our Child Exploitation and Missing Coordinator. There is an Assistant Team Manger in the service to share managerial duties.
